The misfortune of one is the happiness of others and the Ebola outbreak allowed the owners of the website name “Ebola.com” to achieve a good financial transaction by selling their domain name for over $ 200 000 on Friday.
This transaction illustrates a sometimes risky practice when speculative investors betting on domain names of websites they buy for a pittance before selling much more expensive once the name has aroused some interest. In this case, the value of the name Ebola.com is gone since the beginning of the outbreak of the deadly disease that affects West Africa since the beginning of the year. The buyer of the domain is a Russia-based company called Weed Growth Fund, formerly known as the Ovation Research. The company has spent 50,000 dollars in cash and 19,192 shares of the company Cannabis Sativa, which are worth around 170,000 dollars. The latter company promotes the medical use of marijuana. The reasons behind the sale of the domain name is not known, but the boss of Cannabis Sativa, the former governor of New Mexico Gary Johnson, has said publicly suggest that cannabis may be useful in treatments for virus haemorrhagic fever. The seller’s name is now Ebola.com Blue String Ventures, based in Nevada, which describes itself as a company investing in domain names and trademarks on the Internet. “If you are looking for a great domain name for your business, there is a good chance that we can help you,” says Blue String Ventures on its website. The firm has particular detainee names like Fukushima.com. Ebola.com The site contains articles on the disease and answers to frequently asked questions about hemorrhagic fever that has killed nearly 4,900 people since the start of the year.
